PRICES FOR PERSONAL ELECTRONICS
Note that all of the below are subject to confiscation / loss / damage during the course of an Adventure. NONE of them are waterproof, nor can be waterproofed unless you can prepare at leisure for entering water. (ie you get to rest before entering water, etc)
Desktop Computer : Free.
It is assumed to be a relatively necessary part of life in the year 2010, and is not generally accessible during an Adventure. You can use it outside of an Arc for data collection and gathering information, preparation work, and of course Email communications.
You can choose not to have one if you feel your character would not have one, for whatever reasons (illiterate, comes from a 3rd world country, etc)
You cannot have more than one Desktop, and it is assumed to be moderate power. You cannot collect an infinite number of free Desktops and harness their combined computing power.
Handphone: $50.
A Handphone is just an Analog phone. It does not have Smartphone functions. For most part in Arcs, you will be blocked from regular Analog Communications, and even when present, they may be subject to tapping.
Smartphone: $200.
It serves a Mobile Phone function, and can also be used to send and receive Email, surf the Internet and reveal street maps where there is coverage. This is not always available obviously. Smartphones have relatively small screens and cannot be used to see things with any significant detail.
Smartphones can also take photos and videos. Their space is limited, especially for Video purposes. It is considered extremely time consuming to try to take photos every page of a book (such that it can be read)
Smartphones are assumed to have software to communicate with other Smartphones and Laptops within a reasonable wireless* reception. Note that Digital airwaves can be tapped, and can also be blocked or intermittent at times. Note also that Smartphones can only interface with these 2 types of devices, no others.
Laptop: $500
( NOTE : I understand some people call certain Laptops as 'Notebooks'. For the sake of convenience and clarity, I will assume a Notebook is simply a paper writing pad that you can use to take notes with pen and pencil etc )
The Laptop is assumed to have an inbuilt camera, a wireless* Card and also a XG (ie 3G, 4G, whatever it is...) compatibility that can directly tap into digital networks. It serves most of the functions of a Smartphone, and can also be used to interface with most other devices that have an outlet (Wireless* or LAN or other means)
Systems that do not have a visible input may be difficult or impossible to Hack without a means of input. A laptop that can interface with it can increase the speed and effectiveness of Hacking, or make Hacking possible when it previously was not.
Note that Laptops are more vulnerable to being hacked and infected than Smartphones. A virus in a Laptop can always be wiped (usually outside of an Arc) but data will be lost. A virus can also infect an email account, and it might not be possible to clean it effectively.
OTHER ELECTRONICS
This list is for reference. You may not start the first Arc with any of these devices, but you can have them in your home if you wish.
If you think your character should have any of these, please check with the GM.
Voice Recorder: $100
Stores spoken sounds in a variety of formats. Voice speaking at normal volume may be stored at up to 5 squares (about 7.5m) away assuming there is absolutely no obstacles, but in practice the distance may need to be closer.
Generally speaking, they can store up to 12 hours worth of sounds.
Camera: $300
The standard electronic camera. That videos are usually limited to relatively up close videos in good lighting and longer in duration (up to 5-10 mins), or more high quality and extremely short (below 30 secs). The storage space for Videos is limited, though it can be mitigated by purchasing more storage or transferring them to another device.
The Camera has no Wireless capabilities.
