10.0 Unwanted Interference 02-Feb-13 The Heroes found no meaningful leads from the one warrior they captured, before letting him go, and searching the bodies found a metallic sheet of paper in an envelope. Through a Magic Mouth ritual on the sheet, they heard Dalanar chiding them for preventing a "bloodless transition". Fortunately, one of the Heroes detected another ritual simultaneously triggering, warding off incoming Sending rituals from reaching the Heroes. Deciding to visit Lord Marlon Merenthis (see 4.0), the Heroes passed through the Sewers effortlessly slaughtering slimes and carrion crawler and reached his estate without problems. Lord Marlon Merenthis aided them in a counter-ritual to end the warding effect, and they received a somewhat delayed Sending from Xyphrenos (see 9.3, 9.4), warning them that intruders have arrived to the Tomb of Queen of Valytha.
Meantime, after discussion and seeing the fake Seal, Lord Marlon concluded that the vampire must be somehow linked with some royalty, though whether the vampire was the mastermind influencing the royal, or vice versa, he did not know. Uncertain of his own ability to protect the Seal, he returned it to the Heroes, and also mentioned that the Abbot of the Temple of Bahamut was trying to get an appointment with Baron Ron Alfelios to investigate his estate concerning the night of the Wraith Infestation (see 7.5) Since there was no concrete plan on how to ferret out the true Mastermind, Lord Marlon asked the Heroes to abandon both their plans in Berklin and their plans to aid Xyphrenos, and instead travel to West Garrison to protect Captain Ardon (see 4.0) with their lives. In meantime, Lord Merenthis arranged to have the Heroes' names cleared from involvement with the Slavers, ending their Wanted status (see 2.2) ( The 20% surcharge on items, residuum, rituals etc will come to an end ) Contacting their ship captain Weyward, the Heroes realised he was under duress and near the location of the Tomb, likely having been "employed" to bring Dalanar to Where Xyphrenos was. However Lord Marlon provided contacts, and sent servants to arrange for a ship for the Heroes.
Realising they would not arrive in time to aid Xyphrenos due to half a day's journey and the Sending already delayed, the Heroes also noted that Dalanar was likely not in Berklin. Taking the opportunity, the Heroes visited the Abbot of the Temple of Bahamut so they could enter the Estate while Baron Ron Alfelios was out for the meeting. The Abbot discreetly advised them he would be meeting the Baron for dinner outside that evening, so the Heroes could make their move at that time. Meantime, one of the Heroes converted to Bahamut and received his blessing for his role during the Wraith infestation, while another Hero plagued by a demonic bloodlust received strengthening in his resolve against it. Spending some time in the afternoon to shop around, the Heroes waited until evening to infiltrate the Estate. Despite a few close shaves they managed to enter the Estate grounds without raising the alarm and headed back to Dalanar's tower. They managed to avoid detection from servants until they reached the Laboratory (see 7.2) which seemed visibly "sterilised" with mostly alchemical apparatus for elemental experiments. They did not have time to look around though, being almost immediately set upon by Golems, Iron Cobras and Flame Serpents. Though they survived, it seemed that their presence had been expected.

10.1 The Haunting 16-Feb-13 Returning back into the chamber where the party had fought wraiths and burned Dakanar Malferon (see 2.1, 7.1, 7.3, 7.4) to ashes, they found it likewise sanitised, with most evidence of necromantic activities removed. Apart from being dimly lit, the room seemed to be swirling with dark clouds, and the Heroes noticed in the distance some swirling shapes as well as a tablet on a shelf in the far wall, as if a memorial for someone. Drawing closer, the swirling spectres formed into insubstantial versions of the Heroes, and when threatened prepared to attack. As the Heroes battled on, they realised the spectres used their own abilities against them, even targeting the same "Hero" that they targeted. Despite a distraction by a forcefield around the tablet, eventually the Hero's Healer guessed it was a form of illusion and charm effect, and managed to get everyone out of the room, albeit not before a lot of damage had been done. The Heroes barely had time to catch their breath in the stairway at the far side from where they entered, before they found themselves separated and trapped in immobilising web and burning blue walls of icy alchemical fire, and struggled to break free. Before another Hero could open the door at the top of the stairs to escape the burning cold walls, fortunately the Healer discerned it was an illusion and charm of sorts, and eventually they managed to break free of the illusion and take a much needed rest lest they step into another unpleasant situation. During the rest while trying to exorcise the spirit behind these effects, the Healer determined that the illusory effects were a manifestation of Dakanar Malferon's trauma before death, and his spirit was still forcibly chained to this place. This was likely done by a strong arcane and divine ritual that also empowered the spirit to influence the thoughts of those still alive, possibly for easy access by his brother and as a guardian of sorts. Well-rested, the Heroes prepared to enter the top floor of Dalanar's tower, opening the door to reveal a medium sized room with curtained corners and a cross-like table with a precious large onyx gem set in a dais in the middle, and chairs facing the gem. A Hero's skilled in arcana detected it was likely used as a conduit for communication with a powerful entity from another plane, and through which that entity could also affect things in this plane. Remembering the meeting with the Lady in the Gem (see 5.2), one of the Heroes could confirm that this gem was likely used to serve as another soul gem conduit for her. Unwilling to face her, most of the Heroes remained outside the room but one still went to try and seize the onyx gem off its mounted dais. A necrotic ray of energy struck him to drain his soul, dazing him before he fell unconscious. Though his companions rushed in to try to save him, carrying him next to the door and trying to get him to shake off the effect, they could only watch as his soul was drained away, leaving them with a limp, lifeless corpse. As if to add to the irony, the onyx gem sent out a mental ray hypnotising the last Hero outside to step into the room, before the door slammed shut behind them, locking them in.

10.2 Down to Earth 23-Feb-13[/b] Having trapped the Heroes and demonstrated her power, the Lady in the Gem offered the Heroes a choice to ally with Dalanar and further his plans in the Empire, or to have their souls brought to her plane of Athas to serve as her agents. While the Heroes were still debating their options while flatly refusing to work with the vampire and moving towards the door, she suspected they would try to flee and started by sending waves of necrotic energy out to drain their souls. While being bombarded by waves of necrotic energy, some of the Heroes tried to get past the Arcane wards she had placed upon the locked door, while others searched the room, gathering some vials of blood, necromantic ritual books and information about Dalanar's research on the succession to the throne of the Shian Empire. Fortunately, they all managed to shake off the restraining effects of the Gem and fled out the window to brave a 130' sheer drop. Three Heroes opted to climb out via rope then dropping down, but then a mysterious vampire appeared within the room and used a blade to cut the rope and sending them falling to earth. Before they fell though, they observed the vampire was a human, certainly not Dalanar, and seemed dazed, and from his clothes seemed to be from a distant bygone era. Thereafter the Heroes fled the Alfelios Estate, drawing the attention of guards as they scaled the walls, but managed to survive arrows and bolts to disappear into the night before they could be properly identified.
Regrouping in a safe inn and taking a rest, the Heroes tried to piece together the information they had found. They also tried to contact Xyphrenos, and received the good news that he was alive, along with the bad news that Dalanar had defeated him and was now aware that the Seal the Heroes had was likely a fake. ( For details of all the clues gathered, refer to the Information Log ) The Heroes debated between trying to find a Tiefling Heir to the throne that they had no clue how to locate, and setting sail for the West Garrison to protect Captain Ardon as requested, even as the night deepened.

11.0 In Defense of the Empire 02-Mar-13[/b] Before sailing for the West Garrison, the Heroes met with the Abbot of the Temple of Bahamut, who mentioned the Mayor Alfelios seemed cooperative in allowing an investigation of his estate. The Abbot would coordinate with the other heads of the major Temples of Avandra, Ioun, Erathis, Moradin, with each Temple to send a pair of senior priests to investigate Dalanar's tower in the estate of the Mayor, accompanied by the Mayor's guards. Apart from a brief suggestion to include Paladins in the investigation, the Heroes seemed satisfied with the care taken. Following a brief attempt to find magical teleportation means to the West Garrison, the Heroes decided to carry on as planned by sea. While at sea close to Flotsam, they found what looked like a deliberately sunk ship near to shore, visibly the same caravel that they had captured from the Red Scorn and presented to their ship Captain Weyward (see 4.2, 4.3, 6.2). Attempts to contact Capt Weyward himself proved fruitless, and they guessed he might be dead. Arriving in Flotsam en route to the West Garrison, the Heroes found that Lt. Caldwick (see 7.5, 8.0) had apparently taken over his father's Elder Chadwick's role in Flotsam (see 1.0, 1.3, 4.2). Under his leadership, there have been efforts to bring in more of the Military to secure the village against the depredations of slavers and for the security of the small port-village for use by the Empire, with possible prospects of growing the village into a small town.
It would be in the early morning 2 days from their departure when they arrived in West Garrison, and being recognised for their past contributions, they easily met with Capt Ardon (see 4.0). He was surprised, thinking that they would be investigating in Berklin. Apart from having the Heroes protect him, Ardon informed them recently Orcs have been massing on the borders but not attacking. The Garrison officers believe they are massing for a large, coordinated assault on the West Garrison, to try and bring it down. Eventually, the Orcs made their move against the Garrison during the night. Taking to the North Gate of the Garrison, the Heroes and men led by Capt Ardon strove to hold the wall against an onslaught of bloodraging orcs, flame-hurling grenadiers, lightning-striking shamans, led by an Eye of Gruumsh, and were unable to stop them from destroying the garrison's gates. It was only thanks to the Heroes that they barely managed to stop the attackers from rampaging past, and eventually managed to slaughter all of them under the gate. The West gate had managed to hold its own, albeit with heavy casualties, but to the South the battle rages on...

11.1 Unto The Breach 09-Mar-13[/b] Hearing that the South Gate had been breached, Capt Ardon asked the Heroes to assist there, and he would join them shortly. Arriving, they found the remnants of the human defenders being set upon by the Orcs. Supporting the remaining defenders, and assisted by another squad led by Capt Ardon, the Heroes managed to hold the line, despite seemingly unending waves of Orcs arriving through the Gate. Fortunately, one of the Heroes managed to stop up the ruined South Gates with a Fire Wall, and not even bloodthirsty savage orcs would brave clambering over rubble while being incinerated. The same Hero managed to stop the Orcs that had taken the wall from pulling their comrades up to join the fight. With the Orc reinforcements cut off, and another squad of battle-hardened soldiers joining the fray, the Heroes managed to exterminate the remaining Orcs within the wall none the worse for wear, greatly impressing all the survivors.

EDIT : Standardised the Odd / Even Encounters. Since there's so many Players on the verge of Levelling up, we convert them all to even and let them level up.

EDITAnyone who has exceeded 8E automatically follows the "Party" Number of Encounters. The "Odd" and "Even" standardises Daily Power Recharges and Action Point gains so everyone can be engaged together in the same exercise and help each other out. This also means that 2 extra Players - Rubern & Andy - get to Level up

11.2 Assassins 16-Mar-13[/b] After the Fire Wall had died down, the Heroes and remaining soldiers found two bands of soldiers who managed to deal with the remaining Orcs that had been outside the walls, and said they were all the reinforcements that Flotsam could spare. With no immediate threats to the Garrison for the time being, the respective Captains of the Garrison, including Capt Ardon, went about setting things in order, organising those who could to man the walls, having the wounded tend to, and sorting out the dead. A Hero noticed that Capt Ardon attended to selecting those for Raise Dead personally, and did not seem to favour those with rank, and asked by what basis did he select. Ardon noted that he chose based on those who had shown valour and slain at least 2 to 3 Orcs, and he would later meet with various officers one by one to see if they could contribute part of their resources so they might restore more lives. Meantime, he suggested that if the Heroes were weary, they could rest, otherwise he suggested they help guard the South Gate which had been most heavily damaged, to which the Heroes agreed.
It would be later that same night that the Heroes and guards spotted a few large groups of soldiers approaching the garrison from the South, supposedly more reinforcements from Flotsam. When surprised to be denied entry, Lt Caldwick* himself personally appeared, identifying himself as their leader and explaining that these were all the men he could muster at the relatively short notice. When asked about the earlier men, Caldwick did not seem aware that there had been men sent earlier from Flotsam. Realising that they may have been duped, the Heroes abandoned the South Wall, rushing towards Capt Ardon's barracks, and found armored men in wait for them. Even then Ardon's voice was heard, denouncing an assailant in the barracks, while shadowy figures fired poisoned shurikens from atop the bunks to slow down the Heroes. The situation was tense, with the Heroes scattered and slowed, their Healer garotted and restrained by an unseen assassin amidst clouds of darkness in the night, while presumably Ardon fought for his life in the barracks. Fortunately, the Heroes managed to make it in time to the barracks, picking open the lock and finding an Assassin - no less Talon, a former party member - garotting Ardon. Fortunately, a Hero managed to daze Talon with poison, and between healing Ardon and dazing Talon the Heroes managed to mark him and keep him from using his Assassin's Strike again. Eventually Talon fled, but by incredible fortune he was unable to hide properly and a Hero trained in Arcana managed to determine his location, and eventually they managed to capture the Assassin.

12.0 Plagued 23-Mar-13[/b] The Heroes' interrogation of Talon revealed little except that the assignment was a private deal from a shadowy, shrouded Eladrin Magic-user, and that Talon had only received the name of Capt Ardon on that day itself. They also found on him a magical Gem that could prevent Raise Dead and be used for communication. Talon turned down a counter-offer to go after his employer, though he agreed to report that Ardon was dead, and keep the party informed of future hits ordered. It was a close vote, but eventually he was set free, with a military Ranger sent to tail him and report where he went. The Heroes also found out Lord Marlon Merenthis had been arrested and detained in Berklin, making Sending rituals fruitless in reaching him. Shortly after the Heroes were visited by the Lich who had served as Xyphrenos' Guardian (see 9.3), seemingly repentant and hence turning himself in for destruction by one of the Heroes whose town he had wiped out a century ago. A particularly astute Arcanist among the Heroes managed to identify the "Phylactery" of the Lich that was brought along as a Dimensional Anchor of some sort, and which also bound him to obey a good bearer of the item. The Hero he came to find managed to fight back the darkness within to not attack the Lich, and in return the Lich removed the Demonic presence from him. At the party's request before he left, the Lich also provided them a Bag of Holding and half of a pair of potent Sending Stones that could pierce through Forbiddance rituals, and offered to bring the other half to Lord Marlon Merenthis wherever he was.
Before morning came, orders came at the West Garrison that Capt Ardon had been summoned to the Shian City by the Commander-General Duke Galion Merenthis. Though Ardon was reluctant to leave his command at the time it was most needed, he left instructions for defenses and resurrecting the dead, before departing with the Heroes. Two days later as the party travelled through Zeychand, they heard news that a village nearby called Hendro had been afflicted by a severe incurable plague of some sort, and the Military had sealed off the place, with the possibility of wiping out the whole village and torching the place if things persisted.
Detouring to the village, the Heroes heard that those who died of the odd disease exploded into swarms of infectious spider-like Rot Plague swarms. The party Healer managed to recall the disease as having roots in Arcane Necrotic magic, and its root was likely a demonic undead infestation of some sort. Without eliminating the source of the plague likely somewhere in the village, conventional cures could do little but only delay the terminal stage of the disease. Entering Hendro to try and find the source of the disease, the Heroes found resigned villagers gathering about daily business, and the party Healer tried to attend to those sick. However a death caused a pair Swarms to appear, worsening the disease in those who were attacked and shortly causing more Swarms to appear. The Heroes managed to heal and prevent some injured from exploding into more Swarms, and with considerable effort eventually destroyed the Swarms before they were overrun.
Three of the Heroes - Sylvannas, Varius, Ardon - are at risk of contracting Rot Plague, but have resisted it thus far.

12.1 Grave Affliction 30-Mar-13[/b] Speaking to the villagers, the Heroes found them mostly resigned to their fate, with many furious towards the Gods and the Empire for abandoning them to their fate. The Heroes found that most of the Plague Swarms seemed to come from a derelict graveyard nearby, that used to serve as a burial ground for an old noble family that is no more. Entering the graveyard compound and faced with small mausoleums, the Heroes found themselves beset by Swarms, but these were soon joined by large undead demons, with rending and tearing pincers and that could re-gather defeated swarms. Despite the beastly nature of their foes, their enemies seemed to possess a dark intelligence, taking down the party Healer not once but twice. It was only through concerted effort that the Heroes managed to defeat them, but not before the Plague had settled upon Capt Ardon, the very person the Heroes were tasked to protect.

12.2 The Heat is On 06-Apr-13[/b] Entering two of the small mausoleums, the Heroes found they all six of them led to the same common area, a single large family burial crypt that seemed unnaturally cold. The central section of the crypt was in a lowered dais, but instead of sarcophagus the Heroes found a large portal in the middle of it all which was the source of the Plague Infestation, and the entire lower area had the floor covered by what seemed to be frozen Plague Swarms. As the Heroes tried to seal the portal off, a dark aura of psychic necrotic power filled the pit, the temperature started to rise and as some of the ice thinned and melted, twining plants grew out of the base lower dais. These plants crept up along the walls of the pit to seal the entrance to the place, even as their roots crushed the ice around the swarms, bringing them back to life as Ravenous Plague Swarms, more frenzied and dangerous than the previous Swarms. With the number of Swarms initially emerging, it took a while for the Heroes to decide whether to focus on the immediate threat the swarms posed or figure out what was going on. Fortunately they oriented themselves before they were overrun, and managed to focus on getting rid of the plants then the Swarms. Even as it seemed victory was at hand, through the portal would emerge not one but two large creatures of rotting flesh with distended bone-like claws, even before the Heroes had time to rest and recover...

12.3 A Purposeful Plague 15-Apr-13[/b] Identifying the creatures as Doomcallers inhabiting the body of Boneclaws, the Heroes had an inkling what to expect, but nonetheless the initial ferocity took them off balance. After taking a few initial hits, the Doomcallers filled the pit with their dark aura, partly shrouding it from those outside the pit, and using their roar and shredding claws to bring two more Heroes falling into the pit. They then used two large bursts plague-infested spores, dominating those succumbing to it, and aggravating the Plague in all those caught within the clouds. Though the Heroes resisted the plague, Ardon's condition worsened, and a few were unconscious as the psychic whispers were heard in the minds of those present : leave the Captain behind and they would not just spare their lives, but also withdraw the Plague's influence from the village as well.
The Heroes did not reply and pressed on doggedly, with the Healer entering the pit to try and save more allies. The gambit paid off, with enough of them recuperating to bloody one of the Doomcallers, that only narrowly escaped through the portal, but not before the Ardon's body worsened amidst another burst of plague spores, entering the final stage of the Plague. As they bloodied the remaining Boneclaw, the portal channeled dark energy to render it insubstantial, its form partly emptying out to birth another Plague Swarm. Fortunately, the party's Defenders kept the beasts under control long enough to defeat the insubstantial abomination, after which the previously injured Doomcaller, partly recovered but still weak, returned to try and finish the Heroes off. It was a close contest, but with the very last of their reserves the Heroes managed to reduce it into a pile of plagued bone and rotting flesh, then taking a breather before sealing off the portal.
Nonetheless, with Captain Ardon in the critical deathgrip of the plague, would the Heroes' victory turn out hollow?

12.4 Waylaid 27-Apr-13[/b] Anticipating his own death, Capt Ardon pleaded with the Heroes to inform the villagers that they were sent by the Military, so that they would not bear ill thoughts of rebellion against the Empire. Yet thanks to the selfless sacrifice of the Healer, Capt Ardon managed to last through the aftermath of the Plague, but the Healer's condition took a turn for the worse. Fortunately, with the portal closed and the dormant swarms found to be dead with the source of the plague cut off, the Healer managed to gather herbs and concoctions to attend to the plagued villagers, who started to show signs of the improvement now that the air was no longer constantly filled with the plague spores from the crypt. Between the grateful Capt Ardon, the villagers that got better over the day, the military agreed to let them through the blockade despite some of the Heroes suffering from the plague.
While travelling from Zeychand to the Azure River, the Heroes also received news from the Ranger they had sent to trail Talon that the Executioner had arrived at the village about a day before the Heroes, only to depart without a rendezvous upon finding the village caught in the plague. From there the Heroes travelled by river upstream to the Shian City, but their sharp-eyed Ranger spotted something untoward about some small ferries that were waiting and watching the ships that plied up to the capital. This was reconfirmed to be enforced by the use of scrying magic. Deciding to beach the ferry and disguise themselves to avoid whoever it was, while sending the ferry to wait for them further upstream, the Heroes soon realised that the few individuals had beached their crafts and were heading towards them.
Fortunately they found a suitable position to dig in, before they were set upon by what turned out to be Yuan-Ti, with two Abominations leading, followed some greatsword-wielding and venomous yuan-ti, and a pair of mind-controlling, commandeering yuan-ti. There were some close shaves due to Ardon's critical stage of the plague, but the Heroes dispatched them quickly enough to prevent any of them from landing the killing blow on their weakened ward. In the aftermath, Ardon got better from the plague, but the Healer rested poorly and was just barely able to resist being consumed from inside-out by the plague.

13.0 The Troubled Heart of the Empire 04-May-13[/b] Interrogating one of the captured Yuan-Ti, the Heroes could only determine that it seemed Zehir was somehow involved. Feeling magnanimous, the Heroes decided to set the Yuan-Ti free.
Arriving in Shian City, the Heroes opted to keep themselves low profile, with Ardon taking them to the Merenthis estate in the city. In view the estate was being watched by Constables, they did not arrive undetected. Entering the place, the few Merenthis guards appeared to have had most of their larger weapons confiscated, and even the hall where they were waiting for Duke Galion himself showed signs of large, long weapon racks having been removed and taken from the Estate. Duke Galion Merenthis received Ardon warmly, but seemed reluctant to speak, until all of the Heroes left except the Healer who had sacrificed to save Ardon. Speaking in confidence, and communicating with Lord Marlon, Duke Galion finally came to the unhappy conclusion that the investigation was justified to some extent - it appeared that the leak was Lord Marlon himself, who by sending the Heroes to Ardon, exposed him to those watching the Heroes. Though initially wanting Ardon to remain to be cured of his plague, he soon realised that with his family under watch and house arrest of sorts, and his main contact in the palace - the Emperor Beldon Shianis himself - ill and unable to act fully independently, it might not be wise to keep Ardon in the Estate. He also noted that the Plague seemed similar to the Emperor's own condition. The Healer suggested attending to the Emperor, and Ardon himself suggested letting him take the Heroes to see the Emperor, since he could vouch for them where Duke Galion himself might not since he was under investigation. After providing a generous Reward of sorts to the Heroes and some potions to help with the plague, the Duke let Ardon depart with them. Leaving the Estate, they were immediately stopped by two robed Magic-Users and a pair of Lesser Clay Golems. Stating they were sent by the Premier Duke Aventis to bring the Heroes to see him, a fight seemed imminent with the Heroes unwilling to go with them. Fortunately, the Heroes managed to convince them that attending to their illness was more important first, and asked for leave to go to a Temple before meeting the Duke. Worried for their own selves being infected, the Wizards assented and they moved on without immediate trouble.
The Heroes disguised and split themselves to try and shake off any observers tailing them on their way to a discreet, hidden Temple that Ardon brought them to, the Temple of the Son of Heaven where Pelor was worshipped, with some but not complete success. There they were attended to by a youthful golden-eyed monk gifted in Healing and a fairly elderly Paladin, that turned out to be Feldon Shianis, the youngest brother of the Emperor. Almost all those who were subject to the plague had their conditions improved, and in the aftermath the golden-eyed monk pointed out the Gem the Heroes carried that was taken from Talon (see 12.0) would drain Ardon's soul away if he died, and so offered to caretake it from them. Meantime, Feldon agreed to join them to visit the palace. Sure enough, leaving the Temple the Heroes were once again stopped by the Aventis Magic-Users, but this time with Feldon present they were less forceful and backed off when Feldon was asked by Ardon to join in the meeting with the Premier. Feldon pointed out that if the Heroes had time, they should meet the Premier, it seemed he did not think ill of him. On being questioned, he also noted the second brother is Celdon Shianis, with a son and a daughter.
Entering the Palace easily with their royal company, the Heroes were placed in a waiting chamber as Feldon and Ardon left to seek the Emperor and request for an audience. Shortly after they had gone, some unnatural clouds started to smoke up the room, before manifesting as Vortex Wraiths, similar but stronger than what the Heroes had encountered earlier (see 7.3, 7.5). Fortunately, the Heroes realised that the Wraiths were likely a distraction, what with Ardon and Feldon separated from them, and instead of trying to destroy them they broke down the locked door of the waiting chamber, though not after some serious injuries were sustained from the attacking Wraiths. Oddly, there seemed to be no guards in immediate sight and no sounds of alarm nor cries for help, as they tried to hurry towards the direction of more similar necrotic arcane energies, with the Wraiths likely following on their tail.

13.1 Cheating Death 11-May-13[/b] Heading down the hallway, the Heroes found 2 Royal Guards engaged with 2 Wraiths, who feared the Heroes were bringing more dark creatures. Instead of stopping the Heroes, the 4 Wraiths that were pursuing the Heroes released charged past them to set upon the 2 Royal Guards, and the Heroes did not attack the Wraiths as they went by and ignored their outraged cries to try and locate Ardon first.
Finding the correct door with the aid of their Arcana-using comrades, the Heroes found the waiting chamber locked from the inside, and opened it to see Ardon and a rather senior-looking robed staff-wielder surrounded by Wraiths, both of them already bloodied, with one Wraith standing by a fallen guard at the side, whose body yielded up another Wraith. Some of the Wraiths were black Oblivion Wraiths, casting out an intense aura of necrotic energy that prevented those within from healing effectively. Despite their best efforts, including unleashing a large burst of radiance on the Wraiths, those undead surrounding Ardon struck him more times, before the staff-wielder switched places with Ardon, taking the blow in his stead to try and keep him up. That proved just enough time for Capt Ardon to unleash potent radiant energy catching most of the Wraiths around him, before falling unconscious due to their debilitating closeness. Though the multiple radiant attacks kept the Wraiths from benefitting from their insubstantial forms, the Heroes soon found that the Wraiths also exploded into vortices of chaotic energies, even as they tried to get Ardon away from the Wraith to heal him, assisted by the bloodied Staff-wielder who turned out to be a Warlock.
In time, the day seemed won, the Warlock hurrying out to help the remaining Royal Guard with the other Wraiths, and Ardon was barely conscious and out of reserves. Then one of the Heroes detected two of the Oblivion Wraiths they had defeated earlier were actually invisibly forming up into a larger Wraith creature. Attacking the invisible foe, they managed to weaken it substantially while it was still more vulnerable to damage, such that the powerful Wraith only had two chances to kill Ardon. It almost succeeded, pushing a final rush to charge the unconscious Ardon, but at the last moment, the Cleric desperately tried to heal Ardon despite knowing him to be out of reserves. That little bit of healing was just enough for the barely conscious Ardon to survive the charge, and the ensuing explosion of necrotic energy as the Heroes eliminated the fell creature. It was only thanks to their Heroic efforts, that their ward was just barely alive.
