10.2 Siding with Nethril 22-Dec-14 (Monday)
The Heroes travelled to Fang, passing by the forested area where they had dealt with the "haunting" by Arewyn, which had since become fairly ordinary, and passed by the raised wooden platforms well above the treeline upon which the rail construction was undergoing. They did not find any dead forest areas as per what Rhygar told them, and asked their warforged servant (see 9.4) to check out the vale where Zimvit and his goblins were (see 2.2, 3.1, 5.2), since the Heroes had previously ignored a call for help from the goblins (see 7.1).
The Heroes arrived in Zethran and after Schaft irritated Zethran's representative with the Sending Stone (see 5.2), he got told to return it to Lady Schumann in order to end his Geas. They visited her home, getting rather annoyed by her uptight butler, and were welcomed by her as she took back the stone. They decided to ask her where to get their reward, whereupon she used the Sending Stone to speak to the rep, and invited the Heroes to wait in her dining area, while providing more refreshments.
Just before the guests came, Lady Schumann activated a powerful anti-magic zone that probably came from something under her large dining table, and the Heroes met once more the familiar party - 2 elves, an eladrin, a dwarf, a human - that had first given them the stone (see 5.2). The human in scale, who had been liasing with Schaft most of the time, seated himself while the rest remained standing, and identified himself as Morin. When the Heroes brought up request for a reward, Morin probed them on why they abandoned the negotiations with the Yuan Ti (see 9.2), to which the Heroes gave an impressive answer about succeeding without letting outsiders know that Zethran was involved. Morin gave away that he was only the mouthpiece by glancing behind about the reward, and an unnamed elf took over the negotiations and the seat. Regarding the Heroes' request, he agreed to match it but would end their working relationship, or for them to settle for a bit less with the prospect of more employment, and so the heroes chose the latter.
From there, the elf reiterated that Nethril's aim was to spread their way of life about the world, and that there were two other kingdoms of concern for them. The first were the elves, secreted away in their forest with skilled warriors and reserves of magic that might challenge Nethril. The second were the yuan ti, whose territory made them difficult to assail, and had the potential to threaten most of the nothern continent. After a brief discussion established that the Heroes seemed reluctant to take on the elves, the elf suggested they represent Nethril to broker peace and try to glean intelligence on how the snakes intended to assail Talestria. From there, the Heroes should go to Anari and ensure that even if Casiorn falls, that Talestria remains independent to keep pressure on the yuan ti so they do not turn their eyes southward to Yanis in the foreseeable future.
The Heroes were then given time to explore town, only about half a day from evening to the next morning, since the peace talks were due soon. They got in touch once more with Beylan and his band of slaves (see 4.4), providing them gathered arms and armor, and learnt that the police had completely withdrawn from the slums, forcing the vigilantes to be the only active police in that district. He sensed that they seemed to want to draw him out, but they had little choice, though they kept to their fearsome vigilante tactics. He also informed them that there was resistance in Yanis as well, led by a certain human called Aklon. The main upset was about how the injured from the ongoing war with yuan-ti were disposed of, with Aklon being left to die, but he was healed by a mysterious cleric and thereafter vested with powers of healing. If the Heroes so chose, they could contact him when they arrived in Yanis.
With what time they had, the Heroes also helped out the new "enforcers" of the Slums by dealing with a troublesome ship of pirates that had been plaguing the harbor now that the official forces of Zethran were keeping their hands off. While the numbers looked formidable to begin with, under the cover of night, the Heroes attacked those who were relaxing below deck through portholes. With incredible alacrity, they all but secured the lower deck, teleporting in before anyone could even react, and the remaining crew above deck could only strike back in a disorganized fashion that was quickly put paid to.

10.3 Diplomacy 29-Dec-14 (Monday)
The Heroes turned the pirate ship in to the authorities proper for a reward, and early the following morning were escorted to the restricted area in the government district where they took the lightning rail to Yanis. An enthusiastic imp on board pointed out the advancements and improvements along the brief journey, and it was not even noon when they arrived in Yanis.
Yanis is a city set on a hill, with a sheer slope on its north side facing the yuan ti front. Its walls and many homes seemed prominently silver, or at least painted and effected to be such, although some were damaged from what were likely ballistas or catapults from the yuan ti. The Heroes were escorted by guards up an artificial hill of sorts, to an imposing silver castle that stood well visible above the minarets of the high walls, where they were received by a very excited Tulip (see 4.3) clad in lavish robes reminiscent of those worn by the Fey Court, who brought them to a large dining hall with a long table while chatting. They learnt her arranged marriage from earlier was to none other than Lord Yaric, ruler of Yanis, who she commented was strangely young, only about 25 years old, and they also realised from her oddly bubbly demeanour that she had been subject to various illusory and mood-altering arcane influences.
After some time, Tulip took her leave and from one of the doors that seemed to lead to the kitchen or servant areas, out came a short and stout man, about 5'5" tall and clad in long leather coat with a distinctly military motif. He introduced himself as Yaric and asked the Heroes' angle in talking to the yuan ti, while presenting to them a glowing red tetrahedon that would be used to keep the yuan ti active in the desert cold. He acknowledged that the device was potentially rigged, but declined to disclose further details when pressed by Osherr, to the extent of not minding if the Heroes should choose to abandon the talks with the yuan ti because of lack of this detail. However, the Heroes chose to carry on representing Yanis, and he summoned a hulking bodyguard, a lion of a man called Aslan to bring them to the meeting point and serve as their bodyguard. After Yaric left and while Aslan was preparing a ritual circle to transport them, the Heroes learnt that Aslan was previously a captain among the forces of Yanis, and his valour resulted in him being handpicked to be Yaric's assistant and student in magic. When asked about the yuan ti Ashradith (see 7.1, 9.2), Aslan remarked that though he seemed a regular abomination, Ashradith was in reality seemingly composed of snakes, and not to be trifled with under any circumstances.
The ritual circle was completed and the Heroes found themselves transported into a tent in the artificial seeming plains just north of yuan ti, close to where it gave way to the jungle. The yuan ti representatives soon arrived with 5 bodyguards - two large abominations in fine, solid armor, with one taller than the other, and 1 smaller sized abomination in leather and with a quill and paper, seeming to act as a scribe. As the conversation started, the taller yuan ti seemed unwilling to come to peace, but his shorter and seemingly more senior compatriot called Jeshirru took the reins, agreeing in principle to maintain current borders peacefully if a different front could be expanded. The conversation was recorded by the meek and apparently small-sized scribe, who turned out to be Ashradith himself. After the yuan ti tested the device and found it satisfactory, the Heroes learnt the heating device - tentatively termed a flame tetra - should be sufficient for about 100 yuan ti, and the snakes were planning to secure Casiorn with about four to seven thousand yuan ti, before pushing forward by land and by sea. They seemed wary of the fortified harbor walls of Anari, as well as the armored knights that Talestria could deploy on the plains, and were open to the prospect of the Heroes helping them by "receiving" supplies while in Anari.
With the agreement all but assured, the Heroes volunteered their services to the yuan ti as and when it seemed profitable, and asked for a token from Jeshirru. At this, he drew out a pair of tiny snakes from Ashradith's sleeve, and offered to have them bite those who would be recognized. The Heroes discerned this would inject into their blood a venom that acted as a Mark of Zehir, and could be turned against them if they were to double cross the yuan ti. They declined on grounds that those of divine bent might detect their allegiance, whereupon the snakes circled and bit their tail, before forming into small jade-like rings, which were once more offered, and this time Osherr and Grisby each took one, although they were aware it might change back and bite them. With that settled, Ashradith drafted up the agreement, and called upon the Heroes to sign in blood, which the Heroes soon realised was effectively a pact between Jeshirru and themselves, and where Zehir would be the arbiter and punisher if it was violated. The Heroes pointed out that they were not natives to Yanis, and Jeshirru seemed satisfied that Aslan sign opposite him until the timely delivery of the flame tetras could be confirmed by Yaric.
On their return to Yaric's keep, the ruler of Yanis seemed satisfied with the development, though he did not take over Aslan's pact of blood on the contract. He conversed with the Heroes and gave them what he deemed a minor reward for their part, and when asked, also provided them two Anti-Venom if the two ringbearers should be poisoned by their jewellery. When asked about Tulip, he seemed pleased to receive such an honor from his now father-in-law, although he had never met Tulip recently. It seemed clear that Yaric regarded her less as a person and more as an object awarded in some obscure ceremony.
(Not Mentioned at Table) The Heroes also learnt more about the empire of Nethril, how Yanis and Zethran were but respectively the north and west anchor cities of the empire. Two other cities, Malchez and Daeron were respectively east and south, each ruled by their own mage as well. The capital of the Empire was Nethril, close to the middle of the empire, and ruled by three mages instead of one. Their leader and the most likely effective ruler of the Empire was an elf called Krasius (see 9.4)

11.1 New Horizons 05-Jan-15 (Monday)
The Heroes decided to find out the schedule of the flame tetras delivered to the Yuan-ti, and returned back to Yaric's castle to enquire. There they found Aslan who told them that they could supply about 5-7 tetras per shipment, two per week, and asked why they would like to know. They told him it was related to what Yaric knows they were sent to do, and asked Aslan to keep them informed when the Yuan-ti would near their target of 40-70 tetras for an invasion on Casiorn.
They then took lightning rail back to Zethran and planned to travel to elven forests, but decided to stop by to visit Lady Schumann. After a brief mention of Tulip, Schumann informed them - with some surprise still on her face - that they had been chosen to receive a Cloudraker, basically a skyship of sorts that was kept at discreetly high altitudes. After a lively debate, the Heroes decided to accept. They met Morin (see 10.2), who accompanied them on the lightning rail towards the heart of the Empire, but stopped it halfway in the middle of nowhere, before accompanying the Heroes off the transport. After activating a ritual circle, the heroes found themselves on board the sleek white craft they would commandeer, that was apparently sailing above the clouds thousands of feet high. The very happy and warm crew of six greeted them enthusiastically, much to the envy of Morin, who they soon arranged to return to Zethran. (for more on the skyship, see topic The Cloudraker)
The Heroes carried on sailing above the clouds to reach the north edges of Elven forests in short order, where scattered chunks of the forests had been reduced to lifeless decaying land. After teleporting onto the surface, they examined the epicentre of one of the areas of destruction, and ascertained it was a concoction in some black burnished metal that caused a defiling fungi to radiate out with immense speed, draining life from all around as it grew outwards. Fortunately the alchemical/ arcane modified organism could only replicate so far and eventually failed, rotting away as well and leaving the lifeless, defiled land behind.
The Heroes noticed they were being observed and as they approached the new tree line, and were approached by a familiar Eladrin called Kherenor (see 7.1) and two wary elves. He appraised them that this was the work of drow, and got the impression this might be a large scale diversion of some kind, but the elves had little choice but to stretch their watch over wide stretches of the north forest. The drow come from the north, within the barbarian steppes, but most teams have either been politely asked to leave barbarian territory or failed to return. Others have found various drow entry points to the surface, too many to deal with in barbarian territory. Kherenor suggests that perhaps the Heroes could find the source of the device and eliminate him before the use of it becomes widespread.
The Heroes tentatively agreed, but internally decided that finding a solid target, such as an originating drow city, that the elves would be willing to strike out in force at would suffice. They managed to encounter and subdue a drow raiding party, but unlike the previous bloody affair (see 10.1), this time they defeated the drow with relative ease. Grisby paved the way with an astounding blow (90+ damage!), resulting in the capture of even the priestess and the rest of her band, a resounding victory for the Heroes.

11.2 In and Out, and In 14-Jan-15 (Wednesday)
The Heroes interrogated the defeated drow and in return for granting merciful death, learnt from the priestess they were from the drow city of Azmodan and the life-draining concoction was made by an alchemist called Arleva. As they were about to turn the remaining drow over to the grim elves, one of the arachnomancers suggested bringing them to where they had come to the surface, likewise for a clean death.
The Heroes followed him into the territory of Fang barbarians, up into forested steppes, dodging a barbarian patrol in meantime. Their captive brought them to a hidden passageway, which they entered and learnt that Azmodan was about half a days journey underground, to those who knew the way, and it was patrolled by drow as well as umber hulks, for the passages to the surface were altered every few weeks. They also learnt that Eldaris (see 6.2, 6.3) resided in Azmodan. For his help, they freed the drow Belshannis, who eagerly headed for a life on the surface.
The Heroes then left the passage and reported their findings to Kherenor for a reward. The elves seemed inclined to march on the territory, despite their unease of facing drow on home ground and concerns about how the barbarians would take to it. Osherr persuaded them to inform Rhygar diplomatically, and the Heroes later dropped by Fang to keep him in the loop, for which he proved grateful if sober about the affair.
They then revisited Konozod and Thane Grognar (see 10.1) provided them a guide to bring them deep beneath the earth to the vicinity of the Tomb of Grand Thane Beornaf (see 9.4), where they intended to deal with the leader of the warforged - dragonborn or otherwise - one way or another. Before they could reach the tomb though, they encountered a patrol of warforged with lightning elementals, and managed to dispose of them.

11.3 Tomb Complex 28-Jan-15 (Wednesday)
The Heroes took a warforged hostage for information, and heard of a third entrance to the tomb, in addition to the two main entrances the dwarf mentioned. They took the third passage, seemingly not often used, and found it led into an atrium guarded by gargoyles, but the passage before the atrium also had a hidden passage into an excavated area about 35' across but with no visible ceiling. Using his dragonling, Osherr saw there were warforged climbing along the high walls of the chamber, and even further up were large metallic wolfbeasts with claws and lightning charged blades, and using elemental lightning fangs and fire breath that consumed the earth as they dug high above. They learnt from the dwarf the tomb was a few kilometres below the dwarf capital of Moragund, and let him and the well behaved warforged captive head back together to warn them.
Thanks to the well executed distraction by Grisby, they managed to get past the chamber without alerting the watching warforged, and at the other side found themselves faced with a cross junction. The passage ahead led to a dead end, with a grate around a hole, through which they saw they were about 50' up from a burial chamber, now converted into an area for molten vats for warforged. There were 5 forgepriests, 2 lightning warforged below, and 2 warforged guardians with shields standing before one of the two passageways out, through which they sensed some magical energies indicating a portal some distance beyond. Checking the left passage, they found it led back down via a ladder into the odd darkness they saw after the atrium area, so they proceeded right.
The path widened and led down past an open archway into a seemingly unguarded corridor. Within the archway they saw a forgepriest assembling one of the large metallic wolfbeasts they had seen earlier. They decided to spring a surprise on him, and though the incomplete construct and 2 gargoyles perched in alcoves at the top of the chamber joined in, the heroes easily dispatched all their foes.

11.4 Just Passing Through 28-Jan-15 (Wednesday)
The heroes interrogated the forgepriest, and learnt about the corridor below as being the holding cells for elemental "components" of the forgehound he was building. Beyond that was a metal components room, from which a left turn led to the vats and then to the dragonborn beyond, and a right turn led into the main hall of the tomb, where the warforged gathered for large meetings where called upon. Opposite the components room, the way led to further chambers relating to the warforged themselves.
The heroes secured the liking and allegiance of the forgepriest, who let them know the components room, being a regular junction in the base, probably required a disguise to pass through unmolested. The heroes decided to retreat back to the grate overlooking the vats, and with the help of the forgepriest, managed to stealthily raise the grate so that the dragonling could go down and scout beyond the guards. They saw the dragonborn from a distance, but a small shape against the outline of the large portal. They learnt he "fed" on the captured dwarves, but they appeared uninjured, merely dead. In any case, satisfied with their reconnaissance, the heroes headed out of the tomb and journeyed back to Moragund.
Along the way they met some warforged, including 2 shieldbearing guardians, as well as a lightning elemental, and defeated them with some difficulty.

11.5 Interim Loyalty 16-Feb-15 (Monday)
The Heroes received a Sending from Nethril via the magic mirror they used to communicate with the Cloudraker. The instruction was for them to ensure the dwarves did not act on the info they had discovered and invade the tomb of Beornaf where the dragonborn and warforged were. However, Osherr pretended that there was "bad reception" and faced the mirror away until the guy gave up.
A very short while later, a black robed figure stepped out of shadows and asked if they could hear him clearly, before repeating the message. They realised it was a simulacrum teleported over a long distance, and agreed to its demands, though fortunately Osherr used his telepathy to communicate with the rest without being overheard. They also learnt from it that the dragonborn Andaelus is a "Nethril operative" stationed here leading a "resource gathering" operation, to accumulate sufficient "clout" to handle the dwarves should things get unpleasant. They agreed to ensure that the dwarves did not act against the Tomb, though they were actually more concerned about securing their airship before turning against Nethril.
After a short battle with warforged on the way back to Moragund, they arrived in dwarf capital. There they learnt from Thane Logran, who had posted the bounty on Andaelus (see 9.4), that the dwarf messenger they had sent back to warn the city (see 11.3) had been detained. They met with the detained dwarf and persuaded him to cooperate with their story before deciding to try and secure his release.

12.1 Who Can You Trust 26-Feb-15 (Thursday)
The heroes approached Thane Logran to have the captive dwarf released. Rather than asking for a meeting of the Thanes and informing the Grand Thane himself, the heroes opted to confide telepathically in Logran. He was momentarily stunned by the idea of doing nothing while such a great threat loomed at hand, but they persuaded him not to pursue the matter for fear of treachery while doing the best he could. He also called for a council of 6 thanes, along with the heroes' written letter about there being nothing to worry about to try and secure the release of the dwarf from Konozod. With that out of the way, he informed them that none of the other Thanes at the meeting seemed obviously the traitor.
The heroes decided to head back to Konozod to regroup, and reconsider their options. Before leaving they tried to "persuade" Logran and then later the dwarf - who had been sent to help them find their way to the Tomb - to give them a monetary reward, but that did not turn out too well. Regardless, they soon encountered trouble in form of a lightning elemental and a huge umber hulk.

12.2 Not Us... 03-Mar-15 (Tuesday)
The heroes arrived back in Konozod and contacted Ceoria via several Sending Rituals. They eventually piqued her curiosity enough for her to send an elemental sprite to communicate with them. They obtained from her a Masking Shroud ritual that, if executed with skill, could cause the entire Cloudraker to become invisible to scrying. They also brought her proxy on board to Cloudraker to scour for dangers and to learn the rituals for steering and propulsion of the craft.
From there they gathered back on the surface the 3 warforged they had previously "liberated", and taught them the rituals to crew the Cloudraker. Satisfied that they had enough crew - who did not have to take a resting shift for now, the heroes performed the Masking Shroud ritual to cloak the ship, then launched a treacherous attack on the merry crew of the Cloudraker. With the advantage of surprise, that saw two of four crew members slain before they could act in the hold, while above deck the remaining two others struggled to get down but were too late to do anything except be slain as well. In the aftermath, their bodies were burned to ashes and the heroes seemed securely in control of the airship.

12.3 Once More, Unto the Breach 18-Mar-15 (Wednesday)
The heroes quickly headed back to Konozod and got thane Grognar to send a few of his elite dwarves with them. They also contacted thane Logran in Moragund to have some allied forces on standby to strike out for the tomb if need be. They then entered the tomb the same way they did previously, gaining access through the previously entered passageway. Eight of the dwarves accompanying them were to harry the front entrance of the tomb when instructed to, while two dwarf paladins accompanied them.
Once more they came upon the place they had encountered a Forgepriest working on a Forgehound, this time substantially more guarded. With some coordination and effort though, they managed to finish off the gargoyles before any of them could escape to raise the alarm.

12.4 Curtains 25-Mar-15 (Wednesday)
The heroes then freed some elementals, both fire and air, causing some considerable ruckus and diversion in the main areas of the Tomb complex. They then took a while to alert the dwarves at the entrance and also Logran, before dropping a rope down through the grate into the chamber with lava filled vats, now guarded only by a relatively token defence. Dispatching the warforged there, the way seemed clear to the dragonborn figure in the area near the portal, but they discerned that it was a projection, that there was an ongoing ritual beneath, as well as having to pass through a magical forcefield that distorted their movement and attacks while in it.
The dragonborn moved to engage them as they emerged from the field, but a timely solid hit with a radiant power caused it to dissipate into nothingness. In its place they instead beheld a monstrous dracolich, baleful fires in its eyes as it breathed a debilitating breath of necrotic energy about them. Fortunately, it seemed not quite its full strength, perhaps in preparation for the ritual that they had interrupted. Even so, its forceful gaze turned the heroes one against another, while they struggled to reposition, but they kept their wits about them and hammered their foe into the ground, causing it to shatter into dust and ashes. Osherr managed to discern that its death would cause the area around the portal and below to collapse shortly, although by seizing a glimpse into the area beneath, he saw there was a massive chamber with rows upon rows of innumerable, inanimate warforged lined one on top of another on either side of the hall. Meantime the rest took what they could, gathered up the seriously wounded and fled best they could.

13.1 Beyond the Portal 22-Apr-15 (Wednesday)
As the ceiling came crashing down around them, Osherr and Grisby found themselves rushing through the portal to escape. Beyond, they battled a pair of gargoyles guarding the entryway used by Andaelus, and managed to get a safe distance before the portal blew up. They realised they were deep inland on a mountain in the elemental island. They explored around and spotted some adventurers in the distance dealing with elementals, but chose not to approach, and also ran into some archons that were mustering elementals against the other party.
Further exploration of the mountain they had first emerged found them in an old eladrin's hide out, where he seemed to be an alchemist and craftsman of some sort, involved with creation of the elemental cubes that the heroes had come across before. He introduced himself as Zathursky, who helped ensure the elementals on the island did not get out of hand by making sure their opposing numbers kept each other in check, and Osherr managed to recall he was an enforcer of sorts from the city of Daeron in Nethril. By sharing with him some information about the world at large, they also learnt more about how Nethril used to be several contesting city states, constantly at war with each other. It seemed the original vision by Krasius was more benign, than the current direction, and he got the other leading mages of the city states to collaborate to unite the area in a relatively peaceful manner.
They also learnt the following about the current rulers of the Nethril cities - Daeron is a human, was the same as the original adviser who joined Krasius, and it seemed implied he has since become a lich - Malchez a half-elf, and is very active for his age. this leads Zathursky to believe that the current Malchez might be his descendant. - Yanis is ruled by Yaric. How he maintains his youthful visage is anyone's guess, but Zathursky believes he is not a lich. - The original leading mage of Yanis was an elf called Aeltharon. He was summoned to Nethril, taking over Krasius in governing the city, and Yaric replaced him. - Zethran's city used to be ruled by another mage who was too ambitious, and Zethran replaced him. - Krasius has another subordinate called Cyriador, who like Aeltharon is a magic user of no mean repute. She is rarely seen in Nethril, even less so than Krasius or even Aeltharon.
Zathursky's curiosity was piqued by their accusation that Nethril was now more warmongering and less benign than before, and he decided to return with them to see if what they had described Andaelus as being up to was indeed true. It seemed implied that if he found the opposite to be true and they had groundlessly interrupted an operation of Nethril, he would probably take action against them himself. He brought them back to the deactivated portal they had arrived by and reactivated it, before inviting all present to step through beyond.

13.2 Clearing Up 30-Apr-15 (Thursday) The heroes returned back through the portal with Zathursky, who used elemental sprites to clear some tunnels of earth and stone in the fallen debris. He also used an elemental form to move through the stone. Though the chamber had completely caved in, he still seemed intrigued by the numbers warforged buried in the earth. He desisted from Osherr's attempt to sway him into destroying them, but agreed if they should be stirred they would not be used for war.
After a brief sidetrack, they returned out the way they came, and passed by the shaft that led all the way up into the darkness, only to see occasional bodies falling down from above. Realizing that there was fighting way up in the distance, Osherr and Vorrash decided to venture up by employing one of the warforged climbing packs from the body of a fallen, although no others would follow them.
They eventually saw a pit opening up into what looked like part of Moragund, where the remnants of the warforged, only about 20 strong, were staging a final but hopeless seeming attempt to invade. The two heroes waiting below along the side of the pit while most of their attention was focused upwards, using Osherr's familiar to observe when the dwarves would attack to dislodge them. Then they seized the moment and timed their move up out of the pit to coincide with the dwarves' attack. With the aid of the dwarves keeping them busy, and although things looked bleak at times, the two of them were able to account for more than half the number of enemies and rally the dwarves to destroy all the invaders.
