On special request by Players.
11.0 In Defense of the Empire
Off the Wall : In the first round of combat, before having a chance to act, Capt Ardon was almost dragged off by a Whirlwind off the defensive wall of the West Garrison, and would have fallen prone in front of hordes of bloodthirsty orcs. At Heroes demand for the GM to use his defensive powers, he managed to teleport to safety after the first attack.
11.2 Assassins (and slow Bodyguards)
Talon Contest : While the Heroes were busy being slowed and dallying outside, Talon made horrible rolls against Ardon and managed to miss him 2 rounds (including 1 time when Ardon used his powers to escape). As an Elite (not a Player Char), Ardon had 47 HP remaining as Talon hit him with Assassin's Strike just as the Players entered. If Talon had just ONE more successful hit with Assassin's Strike (which he regained after being bloodied) or just ONE very solid hit, Ardon would have been killed instantly due to falling under 20 HP.
12.3 A Purposeful Plague
Plague Magnet : Ardon was caught in 3 Plague Spore Bursts, which brought him to a critical stage of the illness. If he had failed just one extra Saving Throw OR been hit twice while suffering from the Vulnerable 10 effect, he would probably have been killed.
12.4 Waylaid
Healer's Debt : If not for the Healer's intervention after the Doomcallers' battle, with his heavy penalty Ardon would have exploded into Plague Swarms.
Snake Bait : With his vulnerable 10, constantly afflicted by ongoing 5 poison, caught in the Aura 10 of 5 poison damage, and regularly targeted, Ardon was almost the subject of coup-de-grace twice. Once averted by timely heal and another by killing the one that could charge and reach him as Ardon had ran out of Reserves.
13.0 The Troubled Heart of the Empire
Way of Peace : The Lesser Clay Golems could prevent healing, and if the Heroes had gotten into a fight, one of the Clay Golems would try to kill him. Still in Abyssal Rot Plague (Stage 2), with -2 penalty to defenses, there was a very good chance Ardon would have died.
Unstatistically Saved : When the 3 Heroes were attacked by 4 Wraiths, they all had to pass a Save to get a clue on what was going on. They all passed their Saving Throw and realised that with Ardon separated from them, the 4 Wraiths were likely just a distraction. They also managed to break down the door in 4 rounds, paving the way for the Heroes to arrive as Ardon was just bloodied. If the Heroes had taken 1 round longer, he would be at under 25% HP.
13.1 Cheating Death
Disruptive Strike : A powerful blow from an Oblivion Wraith was shot askew by the Party.
Body Swap : His companion the Warlock/Rogue used an Interrupt to save him during the fight.
Tenacity of Pelor : Due to the above and a fortuitious twist of fate, Ardon was able to unleash his best and strongest powers before falling unconscious for the first time. This proved critical in getting the Wraiths downed later.
Angry Oblivion : Due to distractions, an Oblivion Wraith turned its attention elsewhere, in the process releasing Ardon from its Aura.
Bouncing Battlemind : Enemies forced from hitting Ardon at the last moment. In one case, slid away such that a burst excluded another Defender, and allowed him to absorb most of the damage that should have hit Ardon instead.
Where did He Go? : If the Party Arcanist had not noticed the Greater Oblivion Wraith forming, it would not have taken a large amount of double-damage while forming, and might have had enough HP to survive long enough for another round of attacks on Ardon, which would likely have killed him.
Aura Distraction : To catch more Enemies in its Aura, the Greater Oblivion Wraith did not position itself adjacent to Ardon, which would have allowed it to Coup De Grace.
Charging before Voidpit : The Greater Oblivion Wraith neglected to use its minor action to try and kill Ardon with a Voidpit nearby as well.
Rules Rule : Ardon was largely incapable of healing, except at the last moment, an obscure rule allowed the Healer to raise him back up to 1 HP. This allowed him to survive the final charge by the Wraith, that hit him.
Going Out with a Sputter : The final explosion of the Greater Oblivion Wraith that hit Ardon could have dealt up to 36 damage. Unfortunately, the dice did only about 20.
