SHIAN FINALE / EPILOGUE

As Hu Jiao Bing closes in for the last blow, there is a faint smile from the battered Lady Kystada - be it Marian or Enethrin, who knows - before his fist connects with her face and sends her crumpling down into an unconscious heap, the gem on the front of her amulet cracking, but still kept in place upon the amulet she wore. The air around her that had been seething with pulses of necrotic energy faded, and the discomfitting tugging sensation upon the consciousness of all those present vanished with it also. However, if any tried to approach her fallen form to handle the amulet, they would sense that the aura emanated from that gem, and handling it would be dangerous.

A short while later, or maybe a couple of rounds, the air above the reddish half pyramid shimmers and Dalanar reappears, looking worse for wear and considerably paler than they have ever seen him, and holding a one foot high black urn with blue and white paper seals upon it. He smiles with visible relief to see Marian's crumpled form upon the ground.

"Many thanks, Crescendo. Pity I was not present to see the altercation." He moves with a light step next to Lady Kystada, as he summons up an ornate ebony chest and gingerly places the urn inside, and taking a large brush, a large inkwell, some magical foci and gemstones out of the magical chest. "I need some time, but feel free to watch and keep me from interruptions." He draws an arcane circle in red ink around her with the brush, starting from the side of her that is nearest the wall, and against the red ground of the place it would be difficult to see the details of what he is etching.

During the time that he prepares his ritual, the party would have time to heal up and also explore the old temple, although he would finish casting his ritual before they could finish resting. On the stone altar up on the pyramid, set into one of four grooves in its side, they would find the Orb that Kystada had presumably been holding. For his part, Dalanar heals up as he performs his ritual, although that is no surprise since though he appeared as an elf, they already knew he was a vampire.

The ritual components scattered about the circle crumbles into dust as the ritual completes, a glow of radiant energy forming in a sphere above Kystada's fallen form, and Dalanar reaches out for it, bathing his right hand in light. They can see him wince visibly, the radiant energy enveloping his hand and causing his flesh to start burning, before reaching down to touch the gem. There is another sound as if of glass breaking, as light spread and enveloped her form. There is a surge of darkness from beneath, seething from her body as if it was trying to escape the cocoon of light, but eventually it is surrounded by light and then he pulls the amulet off her, the light searing it and what was left of the gem before collapsing in on itself, consuming the amulet into dust. All that remains is Dalanar's hand, his flesh mostly melted away nearly to the bone.

Marian came to, gingerly, clutching her head. "What happened?" She asks wearily, staring up at Dalanar.

He sighs - possibly to hide the pain - and gestures to the party. "Well, thanks to the efforts of these heroes, you and your family need never chafe under the influence of your ancestor." He starts returning what's left of his belongings into his chest, utters a command word and causes it to vanish away. "Well, I suppose I should be leaving soon. All the best to you all." Then he fades away out of sight, those with high Arcana would recognise that he used invisibility.

In the aftermath of the incident, Abbot Dawnstar with the Hereditary Seal is appointed emperor. The abbot gently refuses the traditional robes and headdress of the emperor, standing in his usual adventuring attire (a fresh set) to give a speech. He starts with a brief introduction about his time in the Temple of the Son of Heaven, and what he learnt about the history of the great Shian Empire. He mentions its roots as an ascendant barbarian tribe in the north, then prosperity under the view of accessible opportunity for all and any, via the Test of Talent and opening the Military and Justice to take in members of different races. However, there have been those left behind, especially tieflings, who have long been considered inferior troublemakers and devil worshippers. There has been a great injustice dealt to them for generations, and the first thing that he would like to do as Emperor, is to go about healing the divide.

As is customary, this is followed by a celebratory banquet, only this time the emperor himself ends up going to the kitchen to cook and guide the the staff on his preferences, and the entire banquet is vegetarian with tea and no wine. Since it was relatively lighter on the budget, the left over gold is kept for redeployment. Predictably, the party, Chad and Ardon are handsomely rewarded for their aid during all this time (Trent is still officially wanted and has to not be present, receiving his reward via proxy), introduced as heroes during the banquet, and the new emperor spends the first few days visiting the homes of all the officials and all the royal guard, and then moving on to do the same in all the major towns and cities.

Meantime, those involved in any cases and charges relating to the previous emperor's demise are let off. Celdon and his wife Marian continue to live out their days as imperial uncle and wife, and Celdon is offered an honorary position as a Councillor, and he also helps to keep things running in the capital while the new emperor is away. Many view this as an unwise move that invites rebellion, but the new emperor insisted that it be so. Ardon is offered a position as either a Major in the Military or a Councillor, but he declines both, and decides to pursue adventuring. Dalanar would not appear again, but he leaves a Sending to Maeve, the Orb bearer, that his brother will take over his duties in Berklin, and he and his father will be leaving this plane to explore elsewhere.

Likewise, the party members will find themselves faced with other adventures, drawing them away from the Empire and into the Astral Planes. As they face challenges from beyond the boundaries of the world, they will likely gain the attention and interest of powers from the higher realms - both good and evil.
