8.2 "Dreamstealer" Cult
28-Nov-16 (Mon)

The heroes managed to make it out of the goblin village with Lolx the Goblin King, who thanked them and fled into the forest on his own. The heroes then chanced upon some orcs engaged in what proved to be a very one-sided skirmish with some of the alien insectoid creatures. Their leader turned out to be none other than Warboss Bloodspitta, who did not seem to need much help against the beasts, and was curious about the heroes. He asked for a volunteer to test his mettle against, and (as Zaylor was not available) after some discussion, Lunastar took up the challenge. While he proved resilient, he was defeated soon enough, but his "toughness" proved enough to impress the orcs, who seemed content with what they had on their plate. The heroes also realised that the orcs would only last so long against the alien insectoids and perhaps in a matter of days they would attack Timberford.

Returning back to town, the heroes tried to investigate the missing persons in the town. There were no leads from Wally the identities of those missing, but Harry's past case files revealed a cultist sigil that looked chillingly like the alien insectoids that they had encountered earlier. That night the heroes managed to uncover a hidden passageway near the old sealed up well and explored it, to find a cultist base that had clearly been cleaned out, it looks like the cult knew they were on their tracks. They did uncover though that the underground and some of its furnishings would have required a large amount of resources to excavate and build, and decided to check out mayor Xavier the next day. They also followed some tracks to what turned out to be Wally's home, and lured him out to search his house. They found a cultist sigil under his bed, but realised it could have been planted to try and frame him.

Realizing the cultists probably had their eye on them, the heroes decided to be careful and disguise themselves to visit the mayor. They managed to get the mayor engaged in some conversation about possible commercial prospects, while Aislinn and Alek (still in disguise) followed his aide to get some wood samples at the lumber mill some distance outside town. As it turns out, the heroes suddenly found themselves fighting for their existence in some strange dream like situation, against the alien insectoids beings and some sort of psychically powered cultist. Even as they defeated the last strange alien creature, their allies blinked away leaving only Aislinn and Alek, and the dreamform of the cultist suddenly expanded and swallowed the two of them up.

8.3 Returning Favors

Aislinn and Alek came to and found most of the workers in the lumber mill slain, and themselves with blood on their hands. There was only one survivor, the old man cowering in the corner of the lumber mill. Before they could do anything though, Sheriff Harry was already there and reluctantly arrested them. Although they were not immediately aware of it, the rest heard about the news and evacuated the place occupied by their "disguises" before they could be arrested.

That evening, they drew most of the guards out of the Sheriff's office and freed the other two, only to find Harry waiting for them. He told them he did not believe they did it, and suspected treachery, but there was little he could do but make sure the people did not lynch the two captured persons. They also learnt that his deputy Vorgan was the one who told him about murders at the lumber mill, most likely before they actually took place. With his permission, the heroes knocked him out to look like they overpowered him to free their comrades.

The heroes hid out at Zackkon's home, one of the lumberjacks turned Sheriff's guard who had assisted them in the rescue, and assessed what to do and determined the culprits must be the old aide of the mayor, called Orthan, and the deputy Vorgan must be involved with the cult. After determining that the mayor's abode was probably heavily guarded in the wake of the incident, it was best that they ambushed and captured Vorgan while he was about his regular patrols.

The heroes chose a secluded alleyway and planned where to jump him to cup off retreat for him and the two other constables. However, the fight took a turn for the worse as he mutated to gain features of the insectoid alien creatures, even firing a poisoned crossbow with a 3rd arm while lashing out with sword and claw. The ruckus drew the attention of others as well, and when the heroes managed to take him out, some had to distract others asking what was going on with while the rest made a hasty get away with the unconscious Vorgan.

8.4 Down the Shaft

This occurred about the time the heroes met Warboss Bloodspitta (see 8.2)

An orc called Urgrosh from the Warboss' retinue approached the heroes offering them a quest. It seemed that while the orcs could hold their positions against the alien insectoid creatures, the issue was that they could burrow under ground and pop up behind their lines, wreaking havoc. His people have legends of an artifact held by a deep dragon called beneath the earth, that could harden earth and stone to impossible hardness, and he had sent some orcs to caves below to try and find it, but understandably, none have returned. He gave the heroes a device to help them navigate deeper down, and promised a rich reward if they succeed. He also advised befriending the deep dragon rather than fighting it head on - not only would it be a dangerous enemy, it might also be an useful ally.

The heroes followed the caves deeper into the earth, and came to a deep shaft in a dead end with sounds of a river below. They recalled that deep dragons like subterranean waters, and rather than taking the other route that could take a long time down, they decided to tie several ropes together and head down. Alek was climbing halfway when they noticed sounds of burrowing, and managed to keep quiet sufficiently to let the danger pass. Alek found himself in a gargantuan cavern over a subterranean river, and secured the rope so that the rest could follow after him. They explored the cavern and in a side passage found a ramp leading down where they were greeted by a svirnefblin, ie a deep gnome. He said the dragon was his master, but they soon realized he might be the dragon itself in disguise. In any case, the gnome agreed that the alien insectoids were a bother and agreed to consider their request, providing they helped him secure a large meal in form of a purple worm not too far away, and handed them the map to its lair.

The heroes were halfway to the lair when they were surprised by the beast, with each bite capable of devouring them whole into its acid stomach. Even the doughty tank Lunastar had difficulty withstanding it, and might have trouble escaping its gullet. Meantime, Alek seemed to have no problem climbing out from the acid trough, but things looked fatal when he fell unconscious after being swallowed. Aislinn (played by Yongzhi) bravely rushed forward to try to get the worm to swallow her so she could save Alek before he died, and then they found themselves stuck inside, even as Lunastar then Secana got devoured as well, all of them burning in its acidic innards. Things looked desperate in a do-or-die situation of trying to kill the worm before they ran out of healing reserves, but fortunately they succeeded and the creature vomitted them out in its death throes.

The svirnefblin then appeared, amused and pleased at their success. He commented that the worm was a rival for food, and that he had no interest in tasting it. The party also then realized the map they were given was to mislead them into passing through the worm's lair, while making it seem that they were not yet there. In any case though, the deep dragon made good its word and handed them the orb, as well agreed to help the orcs with their problem, subject to its whims. On the surface, Urgrosh was pleased with the outcome and rewarded them handsomely before they returned back to town to check on the missing people.

10.2 Racial Tensions
06-Mar-17 (Mon)

With the heroes having subdued the pirates, Lord Marlon Merenthis' men arrived to commandeer the Red Scorn vessel, and also to rescue the pirates who had been thrown overboard during the battle. Cassandra searched the captain's quarters and found a map of a nearby river, showing inland waterways, and a letter from one Alganon Felrath, instructing the captain Dalton to capture the noble travelling to have talks with the elves. They started to interrogate the captives and found the sorcerer was Dalton, and learnt that while Alganon might be near the location indicated by the map to receive delivery of any VIP (Very Important Prisoner), it was unlikely they could spare time for it unless they were to delay their journey to Zeychand. They decided to persuade Lord Marlon to have some of his men take the captured ship to sail into the river and try to find or capture Alganon. Lord Marlon seemed prepared and agreed to send his men, while carrying on with the heroes to Flotsam, the port-village close by the West garrison.

The heroes arrived in Flotsam that the evening, and dropped by to pay Lt Caldwick (2.1, 2.3) a visit, where they just barely remembered to tell him they had captured the Kray brothers and got them thrown into prison (see events in 4.1), and he gave them some reward for their effort. After some discussion ending in deciding the 3 captured tieflings would be taken by Lord Marlon to the West Garrison, Lord Marlon summoned phantom steeds for the heroes to hurry by night to Zeychand. The tireless mounts swiftly covered what would normally be a longer journey, and shortly after the steed expired, they found themselves at Zeychand in the morning, only to find city guards were quite reluctant to let in a band of so many elves (Beiro, Secana as elves, Lance as half-elf) and even a dwarf (Olaf). After Cassandra showed a military badge and Darius did some talking, the non-humans were searched for weapons which had to be removed from their persons, then the whole party was led into a holding area. Darius name-dropped Captain Gysward (see 1.1) and managed to persuade the Captain - who was once his mentor - to tell them how the situation was and let the party into the city.

(OOC Note : Eladrin and elves are treated as one race, effectively high elves and sylvan elves respectively. Some of the later discovered facts have been summarised into the following briefing for easier reading )

Captain Gysward told them somberly that following reports of elves being up to no good, such as being involved in securing military supplies (see 1.2 and 1.3) and spying on the West Garrison (see 1.2 to 2.1), there have been word of open war with the elves of Amareld getting into the city. This was followed by the elven kingdom dismissing Lysander the elven ambassador to the Shian Empire, and there was a lot of news and suspicion in the city that pure-blooded elves and also half-elves might be spies and agents of the enemy. There were then incidents of human assaults against elves, where Lysander had to judge the accused in his capacity as Magistrate of Zeychand, and since he was an elf, the humans were even less willing to accept his judgments, even as the elven community rallied around Magistrate Lysander. Outspoken elves have also inflamed tensions by calling humans as opportunistic scum looking for a chance to prey on them, including a notable elf ranger called Arvellon who the party had previously travelled with (see 1.1 to 4.1), and it did not help that he was ready to back up verbal shots with actual ones. He seems well-to-do, but then it came to light that his main business is peddling "herbal remedies" of an addictive nature, primarily to humans, and although his business is not technically illegal, this "double standard" fostered more discontent. With increasing random violence of racial nature, the city has been segregated, with an elven quarter carved out and the rest of the city for the mainly human quarters, and the borders watched by both soldiers and the elf militia. Magistrate Lysander himself carries on to hold court in his usual courtroom in the human district near the border, with his own constables comprising of both humans and half-elves. Amidst all this, Captain Gysward is only too keenly aware that this is all going on when they should be united, and the elves of Amareld likely are waiting for an opportune time to strike.

The heroes then went to gather information, with Cassandra heading off on her own, while Secana disguised the non-humans as humans to best of her ability, and led them to see her contact, a shopkeeper called Harrod running what might have once been a flourishing high-end clothing shop. After the relative un-customary hospitalities that the visitor inflicted on the hosts, they learnt some idea as to the origins, and that there are humans that are actively working in an unofficial capacity to ensure the security of Zeychand against the elves. Harrod offered to get them more tea, or bring them to his contacts, but they realised he was probably out to serve his own agenda against them and quickly withdrew.

Cassandra rejoined the party and they went to see Magistrate Lysander, who they found dressed in muted colours at a nearby tea house, contemplatively playing his lute and having a drink, while various men kept watch. After recognizing Darius, Lysander was more open to talk to them, and they learned he had instructed his reception clerks to look out for more cases against elves, so that he could show that he was indeed impartial, but cases have not been coming in. The heroes also gathered that he seemed genuinely attached to the city, despite (once) being the official elven ambassador, he is a native of Zeychand from about the time of its founding.

When asked by the Heroes why the elven aggression towards Shian, he says the official reason he was given prior to his dismissal was concern over the new Emperor Celdon Shianis, the 8th Son of Heaven who ascended about 4 years ago, and his worship of a new God called Kadrigar. Although the spreading of his worship is not actively pursued by the Shian authorities, in the wake of Pelor's demise, his worship has spread through most of the Empire, and it seems the elves have a problem with this. Personally, Lysander thinks this has to do with the almost gradually re-allocate elven military personnel to the West of the Empire (such as Captain Aegenal from arcs 5.1 to 7.2 ), but he's not sure which side responded to which move first. After Beiro managed to win his confidence, he confessed that he does not believe the elves of Amareld will launch a full frontal assault against the city walls unless they are confident to take the city with relative ease due to internal unrest and likely support from the local elves, and added while he was here, he would not let them get away with their plan.

Lysander believes there are elven military agents amidst the elven population, and likely among the humans as well. Although he dismissed Arvellon as too outspoken and brusque to be an actual elven spy, he mentioned it is very likely that there are elven agents around him who are using him as an agitator and attention magnet. At their question, he also highlighted some possible names that the heroes might investigate in the city, naming both humans and elves. He also cautioned that the elven quarter might be dangerous for non-elves, but if they were attacked, they should try not to kill anyone and perhaps bring the bandits back to him for sentencing.
