11.2 Rocky Extraction II

The heroes kept their act together in face of great adversity and managed to defeat the orcs, rescuing the soldiers from the ambush in the pass, but Secana and Darius were badly injured.
Major Ardon welcomed them back to the West Garrison with a fanfare of salute, introducing a new party member (Luna), then debriefed and rewarded the heroes in his own quarters with Lord Marlon present. Major Ardon managed to successfully use Lay On Hands to heal Darius, which visibly surprised himself, and the heroes noticed he has a faded, worn out mark of Pelor on his armor. The heroes conversed with him and Lord Marlon, and learned more, as they decided what to do next.
Meantime, the heroes learnt Azara had cheerfully arrived from Zeychand under orders from Darius' family to accompany Lord Marlon on his diplomatic mission. Darius felt an innate distrust of her and after some deliberation between the choice of Azara, Lysander, and Secana, they decided to send Secana to accompany Lord Marlon to the elven forests for peace overtures, and also to take Azara with them rather than leave her in the West Garrison. They soon set sail westward along the coast bordering Axefold Pass towards the orcish lands, in search of the ruined keep where a certain orc warlord uses as his base to unify and militarize the typically savage and tribal orcs, so they could find and eliminate him.
Under the cover of night, heroes make good headway after beaching and scouting for orcs. Near daybreak they settle into a large cave to reduce odds of being spotted.

11.3 Displacing Beasts
13 Jun 17 (Tue)
The cave turned out to be home to a pack of displacer beasts that returned at dawn after a night of hunting. There were oddities about the creatures, but being caught deep in the cave, the heroes wisely decided to just retreat in the face pf the fast moving, blurry monsters, which did not pursue out into the morning light. Some time later, Cassandra would see a warband of 20 orcs - clearly hunting the beasts - surge into the cave, of which only 1 emerged, and would have died if not for Cassandra's secret intervention.
The heroes eventually arrived at the ruined keep, with a heavily guarded drawbridge and waterless muddy moat, but skirting the perimeter showed the place was in general disrepair and there were many wall breaches to enter the main keep. Nonetheless Odaf attempted to orchestrate a remote wall collapse as a distraction, which backfired badly and Cassandra had to distract the onrush of alarmed orc guards while the rest fled through the ruined walls into the backdoor of the keep.
There they found food storage, kitchen, and a half-orc cook that they took out while he was asleep. They just barely noticed also that the dining area leading to the main hall of the keep was watched by some large spider hidden in the corner, and retreated to plot entry, learning from the surprisingly well informed half-orc more about the layout of the keep, and how he had been discriminated against by the orcs. They deliberated at long length and decided to let him run free via the backdoor out of the keep, but as it were, a group of orc guards chanced by the backdoor about the same time. In the spur of the moment fearful of him shouting for help, Cassandra skewered the helpless captive through the chest with her rapier, to the great dismay of Darius and Odaf.

11.4 Burning Crusade

The heroes decided to make the best of it and use the half-orc's corpse to try and lure the spider while they prepared to jump it, and took it out. Odaf kept a finger of the half-orc, promising him(self) to raise him when he could.
The heroes scouted the main hall and saw many orcs present, guards on the ground hall and archers covering above. Cassandra also discerned there might be gargoyles or traps. They decided to search around and found flammable cooking oil to lay by the door to the dining area. They lured the orcs in before setting them alight, then carried on pummelling them as they retreated into a relatively narrow passageway, winning with ease.
The heroes did notice however, the orc archers that were on the second floor had not engaged, and decided venturing out into the open where they would have ample time to fire on them as they scaled the stairs and corridor around the second floor to reach them would be very bad. Instead, the heroes started desecrating the bodies of the fallen orcs and throwing body parts out into the hall or attaching parts to bolts and firing them up towards the second floor gallery. This enraged the orcs so much it seemed they would come rushing down stairs anytime soon.

11.5 Artillery Ambushed

The heroes just managed to overhear some female voice that did not sound like an orc, speaking to the orcs in soft common. Thereafter, they came rushing down into the hall. Even as the rest held their position inside the dining area, Odaf charged the first orc to enter, exposing himself to the rest outside in the main hall. Two gargoyles joined in at the front and two shadows drifted through the ceiling, flying and clawing at the heroes, melding into the target's own shadows as they struck. The heroes managed to prevail though, with Mavis somehow felling a great many of their foes.
The heroes pushed on unchallenged to the third floor of the keep, where they entered a room with a magical circle and another door to one side. They soon discerned it could be used to summon aid for the enemy, and decided to try and disable the summoning circle, but somehow managed to perform dismally at it, even for Azara who seemed quite taken with the potent magics about the circle. Rather than risk being ambushed from behind at some point, they decided to take their time and plug at it, but someone remotely activated the circle and spectral wraiths materialized from within, bearing malevolent energies that threatened to drain their very souls from them.

11.6 Spectres & Spiders

The heroes commenced their battle against the wraith proper, only to learn that they not only drained surges, but they also exploded upon being defeated. Fortunately they had some radiant energy options that could momentarily cause the etherealness of their foes to subside, and by focusing their efforts managed to secure victory, albeit a costly one. During the breather, Azara indicated though the energies of the circle seemed temporarily depleted, she might try to summon help, but the party was adamantly against it.
Through an arcane sensor, they heard a voice congratulate them on their handiwork, that of the drow that was presumably behind all this, and stating the orc warlord answered to her. She learnt the heroes were sent from the human empire beyond the Axefold Pass (ie the Shian Empire), and mentioned she had heard the elves of Amareld were threatening hostilities with the humans. She proposed that if they were to leave her pet warlord alone, she could galvanize the orcs against the elves on the other side of the forest, rather than down the pass to the humans. This aggression would probably motivate the elves to reconsider their stand against the human empire and aid the peace overtures. Cassandra wouldn't consider dealing with the drow, and Darius insisted they talk face to face, so the voice invited them to press on and ended the exchange.
The next room proved to be a visibly trapped area, with holes from both sides showing signs of spikes and moving walls that would crush and impale those within from both sides, and another door at the end. The heroes' caution proved even more well founded as a large swarm of spiders and more smaller swarms emerged to atack them, but the heroes retreated to the room with the magic circle and crushed the swarms using area bursts and blasts.

11.7 Parley & Pounce

With few options to proceed, Cassandra (or rather her familiar) got Odaf to spear open the door at the far end of the trapped corridor, to find utter darkness beyond and foes calling down entangling lightning and bolts from within the darkness. They discerned their enemies were orcs rather than drow, and quickly retreated back to bait them forward while using blasts to overcome the enemies' presence within the darkness. Two orc shamans and two bloodragers emerged defiantly to meet their fate at the hands of the heroes.
As the heroes were recovering, from within the darkness at the end of the trapped area spoke a voice. While it initially sounded gruff and grating, it quickly switched to a more civilized veneer, introducing itself as warlord Zagarna. While the orc clearly considered itself superior to the plaything to which it answered, it soon became clear he was providing the same offer as the drow previously did. While Darius kept the warlord busy in verbage, Cassandra quickly shot a dispelling bolt that cleared the area of darkness, and the warlord was still surprised when Odaf rushed into the chamber, gouge at the ready. However, an undead wight in reserve behind the warlord charged forward to intercept him. The battle was joined as well as the warlord directed even the wight to strike debilitating blows upon the party frontline, and one last orc shaman attempted to hold the line, but the heroes had the momentum of surprise and also numbers, dispatching them all with relative ease and taking the warlord alive for questioning

11.8 What Lies Beneath

As the heroes retreated to a side room with some old books and tomes about to question their captive, they came across an eladrin called Zaquivir, who claimed to have got here via an underground passage in search of things of interest. They initially suspected he was a drow in disguise, but he coolly managed to convince them otherwise. They were about to question Zagarna when the drow's voice was once more heard from beyond, indicating that she thought it would be a good time to carry on the parley, in person, and with Zagarna's continued breathing as a sign of the heroes' goodwill. Darius agreed to consider and got the rest to (temporarily) not kill the orc whose existence they had come to end.
As they prepared to head to the last chamber, where presumably the drow was, they heard some chanting and incantation from where they had came, only to find that Azara had hung back while they were busy with the orc warlord and was energizing the summoning circle with her ice elemental powers. She indicated she would summon help from the elemental planes to help them with the drow, and convinced Darius to believe her. The heroes soon headed to see Lissalai the drow while holding the orc warlord hostage, only to find her accompanied by two large spiders and one large umber-hulk-shaped clay golem. They conversed at length, with Darius leading the conversation and delaying for time, and learnt what the drow really wanted was to bring the orcs under their control and militarize them for use as their own shock troops. The heroes decided not to have any agreement with her, but to try and destroy her here and now with Azara's summoned aid.
Azara completed her summoning and there was an explosion of ice and stone as a monstrous ice demon burst through the wall on the left of the chamber, flinging a spider to the ground before savagely laying into those around with its ice magics and claws of ice, recognizing neither friend nor foe. Azara stood at the background of the chamber, leaning weakly against a corner and pouring her concentration to try and bring the beastly elemental demon under her control. Although Darius was caught in the crossfire, he generally managed to stay out of harm's way leaving the clay golem to enjoy the monster's tender attentions, but was unable to escape the inexorable grip of the drow's agonizing web. The rest got rid of the enemies one by one and bloodied the drow, but she escaped by leaping into what seemed a ruined well, landing in a splash far below.
Cassandra rushed after to try and finished her off, only to find herself plummeting a long long way down to be impaled onto a spiked web in the darkness far below to evil laughter from her quarry for having fallen into her trap. If not for her precautionary spell, Cassandra might have met her death there and then, but managed to teleport back up to safety. Meantime, Azara managed to weakly mutter not to attack the demon, it was under her control now, as she fell unconscious and the ice demon seemed to gain control of its faculties, asking the heroes what they would have it do. Being told to pursue the drow into the well, the large demon formed itself into a medium girth snake like being of ice and headed down into the darkness.
Just then, Darius managed to finally shake himself free of the pain web effect, and Azara came to as well, as she stared with trembling hands in soft, almost tearful joy to be back in her body once more, and the heroes watched as Darius' icy blade of arcane energy melted away. Azara's mannerisms had changed completely, and the heroes soon realized with growing dread that something dangerous had just been unleashed into this unsuspecting world.

BACKGROUND
The most notable families in the Shian empire are the royal Shianis family, the Merenthis family who manages most of the military, and the Aventis who manages most internal affairs and governance. All three families are predominantly human. The Kystadas are officially a small minor family in Berklin, but the heroes have begun to realize their influence seems beyond that.

1. ELVEN MATTERS
A. Border Geography
Shian shares a long western border with the elven kingdom of Amareld, the forest perimeter providing a natural boundary. The city of Zeychand with its human, elf and half-elf population has long stood as a symbol of peace between the two kingdoms, and is relatively close to the forest frontier. The West Garrison is positioned to defend against the orcs at Axefold Pass but geographically exposed to being cut off from Zeychand if enemies were to emerge from the elven forests.
B. Relocation of Elven Officers
From various nobles, you know since the new Emperor Celdon Shianis ascended five years ago, he decreed a reassignment of elven military personnel from the west of the Empire (ie West Garrison, Zeychand) to the east, and those unwilling to relocate are retired with a stipend. This is ostensibly for military security reasons, and elves still hold some civil positions in Zeychand.
C. Zeychand Schism
The elven kingdom declared its intention to invade some time ago, giving time for a coincidental string of racial crimes to split the Zeychand community into distrust and hatred. To manage the sporadic violence, Mayor Blaise Starfall of Zeychand separated the elves into a portion of the city. When you re-established some semblance of harmony, you learnt not only were elven agents and the church of Kadrigar involved, Mayor Blaise herself was coerced by her family (the Kystadas) to segregate the elven population. Her family has custody of her son in Sunhigh.
D. Diplomacy & Demands
Upon your return from slaying the orc warlord in the ruined keep, you learnt Lord Marlon Merenthis has been taken hostage by the elves. He has been permitted to use Sending freely, but likely with elves kept in the loop. The elves are demanding that the Empire cease the worship of Kadrigar or there will be bloodshed.
E. Insider Knowledge
Zaquivir gathers from his knowledge of the Fey that it is likely hostility-related orders originate from the Unseelie Court, a central governing court in the Feywild that regulates all elven kingdoms across multiple planes. The Court answers to Corellon, and his servants likely believe that the minor deity Kadrigar is responsible for the deicide of Pelor and Raven Queen (as opposed to the new Gods that succeeded their portfolios, respectively the Lady and Nyx)
F. Possible Action
If you wish, Major Ardon can arrange your travel into elven lands. While he hopes that you can free Lord Marlon, you may have more pressing agenda, and Ardon acknowledges any peaceful solution will help. Contact with representatives of Corellon may also help.

2. WORSHIP OF KADRIGAR
A. The First Temple
Five years ago, the current Emperor Celdon Shianis set up the first Temple of Kadrigar in the capital Shian City when he became Emperor. Less than a year after, Pelor and the Raven Queen were dead, and thereafter, worship of Kadrigar spread. His wife Empress Marian Kystada is the high priestess of the Temple of Kadrigar in Shian City.
B. Human
The clergy of Kadrigar are almost entirely human. There are two notable half-elf clerics of Pelor (one in Shian City, one in Berklin) who have since converted to Kadrigar, but the rest are all human.
C. Domains
From Lysander, you learnt Kadrigar is more than just the god of Hope, Life and Sun. He covers six polar concerns - Hope and Fate (or Despair), Life and Death, Summer and Winter. The deities Pelor (Hope Life Sun) and the Raven Queen (Death Winter Fate) each held three, and both are now dead/replaced by other Gods.
D. Possible Action
You can start a "Holy War" by wantonly attacking, destroying and otherwise terrorising worshippers of Kadrigar. Alternatively, you can go after Empress Marian the high priestess of the first temple in Shian City.

3. SUCCESSION
A. The Hereditary Seal
About a century ago, the Hereditary Seal of the Shian Empire was stolen by a tiefling concubine of the Emperor. The ship she escaped on was sunk in the Bay of Mists off Berklin and the Seal was lost. Legend and popular word states whichever Shianis recovers the Hereditary Seal would have the mandate to be the new Son of Heaven, ie Emperor. The rebel tiefling faction known as the Red Scorn have been in search of this item for some time and the heroes have some leads from Lord Marlon.
B. Last Succession
The previous Emperor was Beldon Shianis, and his eldest son (ie former crown prince) was Major Ardon Shianis. Beldon Shianis passed away under mysterious circumstances, and his brother Celdon Shianis was chosen as the next Emperor instead of Major Ardon. As is the norm in the Empire, the identity of the new crown prince is kept secret to foil assassination attempts.
C. House Alliances
You know Duke Galion Merenthis also passed away about the same time as Emperor Beldon Shianis. Although his son Darion retains command of the military, house Aventis seems on better terms with the current Emperor, with growing influence in the civil areas relating to Shian City, Berklin and perhaps in the military. The current Empress is Marian Kystada, younger sister of the current Kystada family head.
D. Possible Action
If you decide to try and support a new candidate for the Throne, you know Major Ardon is of royal blood and may try to recover the Hereditary Seal to legitimize his claim or get enough popular support for an uprising. Convincing Ardon to stake his claim and having a populous city as his base would also be important. Having the support of the major organisations in Shian would also help.
Alternatively, you can also just try to assassinate the current Emperor and hope for the best.
E. Possible Action / Seal
Recovering the Hereditary Seal involves previous leads given by Lord Marlon during the sea voyage to West Garrison. You know there is a tiefling lord called Amilio Blackhart from the Red Scorn that previously had some knowledge of the Seal. There is also a dragonborn called Xyphrenos last seen in Shian City, but he was last seen about five years ago, and the last known still-resident person to have contacted him is the Empress Marian Kystada.

4. TRACES OF PELOR
A. Remnants of Divine Power
Major Ardon is/was a paladin of Pelor, but managed to use Lay on Hands lately on Darius. He suspects there may be a vestige of Pelor left somewhere close by, perhaps in the Temple of the Son of Heaven in Shian City, the main holy site to Pelor in the Empire.
B. Potential for Return
Mavis recalls that some Gods have been restored after death, but there are few cases and means generally differ. One involves sealing part of the deity in some sort of receptacle or artifact of power. Another involves the God manifesting or embedding part of himself in a person. The last involves the body and/or spirit of the dead God being reunited with his divine spark.
C. Possible Action
You may travel to the last known significant temple of Pelor in Shian, the Temple of the Son of Heaven. Major Ardon volunteers his uncle Feldon Shianis as a contact, a former paladin of Pelor and the youngest brother of the Emperor.

5. KYSTADA MATTERS
A. Locations
The Kystadas are officially a minor noble presence in Berklin, but now that the current Empress Marian is the younger sister of Magistrate Mirian of Berklin, they seem more influential than obvious. You also know that Mayor Blaise Starfall, guardian / foster mother of Darius "Black" is a member of the Kystadas, whose son is in Sunhigh under the care of the family there.
B. Darius & Azara, Part 1
Darius' family in Sunhigh were helping him with Azara's demon possession problem. They split the demon's essence in half into Darius' consciousness, allowing Azara to have dominant control over her body, and also studied the Staff of Winter. Due to the "demon's" innate elemental affinity, the formerly martial Darius' hair turned white and he picked up ice magics. You also recall that the former party member Aislinn, a cleric of the Lady, was heading back to Sunhigh after leaving the party.
C. Darius & Azara, Part 2
Darius just learnt that it was not the demon's essence but Azara's soul that got split in half. Thus, since his departure from Sunhigh, the demon had been in control of Azara. In the ruined keep, it had relinquished her form when it summoned one with more potential and malleability in accordance with its nature, allowing The restored Azara seems taken with Darius, though she chides him for bad habits.
D. The Night After
The night after you left the ruined keep, from a distance was a beam of ice rising to the night sky and dissipating into an azure mist. Mavis discerned the ice demon has turned into an icy cloud and is heading east, towards the elven kingdom and Shian Empire
E. Possible Action
Darius and all of you confront (directly or indirectly) the known representatives of the family. Berklin has family head Magistrate Mirian Kystada, Shian City has the Empress Marian Kystada, Zeychand has Mayor Blaise Starfall, Sunhigh has the family branch there.

6. OTHER MATTERS
A. Kill the War
Any plan that upsets the balance of power between the two kingdoms has potential to prematurely end any seemingly unavoidable conflict. If one side inflicts an early crushing defeat on the other (especially on the elves since they are invaders / inciters), is likely to draw the war to an early end and return it to uneasy peace.
